The Knowledge Management and Documentation Unit (KMDU) integrates dynamic knowledge methodologies, processes and input into the Human Rights Training and Education activities to leverage its collective knowledge to amplify human rights impact. The unit works closely with knowledge management focal points across OHCHR offices across the region and provides guidance with regards to access to and sharing of Arabic Human Rights Information.
Additionally the KMDU collaborates with the OHCHR Dynamic Knowledge Team and OHCHR Internal and External Communications Teams on various knowledge management and sharing activities, internally within OHCHR and the UN system as well as externally with the wider public.
Communications:
The Centre contributes to OHCHR’s communications efforts to position itself as the global standard-bearer of human rights. This is achieved through creating engaging Arabic content tailored to target audiences, developing campaigns to broaden reach and communicate impact and key messages, optimizing digital presence and social media platforms and contributing to OHCHR public knowledge platforms such as the newly developed Human Rights Knowledge Gateway. Publications:
The Knowledge Management and Documentation Unit, manages the translation, design and dissemination of the Centre’s Arabic publications as well as other OHCHR produced publications. Visit the “Publications” page for more information.
E-Learning:
The Knowledge Management and Documentation Unit, in collaboration with the Human Rights Training Unit and in collaboration with the OHCHR ESCR section, is developing an E-learning course on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. The English course will be launched in February 2026 and the Arabic course will be launched in July 2026, and is designed to introduce human rights defenders, national human rights institutions, civil society organizations and government officials to ESCR.
Film Competition:
In collaboration with the Human Rights Education Unit, the Knowledge Management and Documentation Unit implemented 2 film competitions for youth in the region to use their talents and voices to shed light on crucial human rights issues affecting their communities. Learn more about this activity.
Knowledge Management Products:
The Center develops and disseminates knowledge management products in Arabic for the various internal and external target audiences in the region. The main products delivered on a monthly basis include fact sheets, infographics and videos. The content and design of these products are all done in-house and are utilized by the Center and regional offices to gather and share impact, make human rights information available for the general public and deliver thematic knowledge in trainings. Since June 2024, the Centre has developed 38 Knowledge Products and continue to create products in response to the needs of the region. Thematic areas covered to date include Economics, Social and Cultural Rights, Human Rights Mechanisms and Rights of Persons With Disabilities amongst others.
