Background:
The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) is the principal United Nations entity responsible for human rights. It embodies the world’s commitment to promoting and protecting the full range of human rights and freedoms enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. OHCHR has a unique mandate to promote and protect human rights for all, contribute to empowering people, support governments, and integrate a human rights-based approach across all United Nations activities.
The Centre’s activities contribute to the implementation and operationalization of the OHCHR mandate in the areas of human rights training, education, and advocacy. This is achieved through raising awareness among States, governments, national human rights institutions, civil society organizations, human rights defenders, journalists and media professionals, and youth on human rights issues, and by increasing engagement in this field—thereby empowering thousands of individuals worldwide to claim their rights.
