Regional Human Rights Arab Moot Competition (2nd Edition) – Training Sessions on International Human Rights System and Mechanisms

Description

From 13 to 23 April 2026, the UN Human Rights Training and Documentation Centre for South-West Asia and the Arab Region, under the Human Rights Education Unit, conducted the online training programme for the second edition of the Regional Arab Moot Court Competition on Human Rights.

The training was delivered through four online sessions held on 13, 16, 22 and 23 April 2026, and was designed to introduce participating university students to international human rights standards, sources, treaties, and relevant international and regional human rights mechanisms. The final sessions also included a presentation on regional human rights mechanisms by the Danish Institute for Human Rights.

The training aimed to enhance students’ understanding of human rights principles and their engagement with human rights mechanisms, while strengthening their legal research, analysis, advocacy and pleading skills. Through this practical and interactive platform, the Arab Moot Court also seeks to encourage dialogue on contemporary human rights issues and build a regional network of students committed to promoting human rights and the rule of law.

Overall, the training brought together more than 250 law students from 64 universities across 16 Arab countries, namely: Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Libya, Morocco, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen. More than 180 students participated in the final two sessions, reflecting continued engagement throughout the training programme.
