Human Rights Training on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights

Regional training programme on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights is a programme in Arabic for National Human Rights Institutions and other audiences in the region on the States’ and stakeholders obligations in respecting, protecting, and fulfilling ESCR as well as their engagement with the related international human rights mechanisms.

Program Background:

The United Nations Office of High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) is committed as per its mandate, to strengthen the promotion and protection of Economic, Social, and Cultural rights within an indivisibility approach to all human rights. In line with this, the United Nations Human Rights Training and Documentation Centre for South-West Asia and the Arab Region (the “Centre”) along with the Economic, Social and Cultural Rights Section (ESCRS), Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, will organize in collaboration with the Arab Network for National Human Rights Institutions (ANNHRI) a regional training course. The training course aimed to focus on “the promotion and protection of economic, social and cultural rights”, targeting the National Human Rights Institutions in the Arab Region.

Objectives
The overall goal of this training course is to strengthen the capacity of National Human Rights Institutions in the Arab region to promote and protect economic, social, and cultural Rights.
At the end of the training course, participants will be able to:
-    Explain concepts, principles, and standards of economic, social, and cultural rights.
-    Describe relevant international human rights mechanisms. 
-    Engage with/ use human-relevant rights mechanisms and processes to advocate for economic, social, and cultural rights. 
-    Monitor and report on social, economic, and cultural rights situations in the Arab region.
-    Develop and disseminate reports on economic, social, and cultural rights. 
Share experiences and discuss some examples of reports, jurisprudence related to economic, social, and cultural rights.

Methodology

The course follows OHCHR’s human rights training methodology, with a needs assessment after nominations and pre-/post-training evaluations, plus ongoing feedback. It is highly participatory with discussions, group work, case studies, role plays/simulations, and practical exercises, and encourages participants to share their experiences throughout the training. 
Materials for all sessions will be provided, and expectations are set on day one, checked daily, and reviewed at the end

●    The training team will consist of OHCHR staff members (Centre & and ESCRS) and experts from the Arab Network for National Human Rights Institutions, as well as resource persons from the Arab region with expertise in ESCRs.
