Launching the Second Edition of Regional Online Training Programme for Young Human Rights Defenders
On 16 February 2026 the UN Human Rights Training and Documentation Centre for South-West Asia and the Arab Region launched the second edition of regional online training programme on “The Role of Young Human Rights Defenders in the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights.” The programme consists of three training phases that will be held online between February and March 2026. The aim of this training series is to strengthen the capacities of young human rights defenders to engage with international human rights mechanisms, monitoring, reporting and advocacy.
The first phase of the training programme was for three days from 16 to 18 February 2026, aimed to enhance the skills of young human rights defenders in the Arab region to engage with United Nations human rights bodies and mechanisms. This phase will be followed by two additional phases that focus on developing participants’ skills in monitoring and documenting human rights violations, and to build young human rights defenders’ capacity to develop advocacy campaign strategies and forge alliances at the regional level.
140 young human rights defenders participated in the first phase including 85 women from 15 Arab countries including Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia and Yemen.
